This face-to-face LASGB workshop, was held at the Tickled Trout, New Road, Preston, PR5 0UJ, focused on SEND issues but was of interest to governors in all sectors especially those who are responsible for SEND matters. As a consequence, it was very well attended.
The workshop included:
An update on progress towards implementing the DfE Green Paper “SEND and Alternative Provision Improvement Plan” was presented by one of our own Exec Members, Mandy Howarth. Her PPT is available here.

The EHCP process in Lancashire – we were pleased to be joined by speakers from Lancashire SENDIAS. Their PPT is available here. Many thanks to Laura Morris SENDIAS Manager, Gayle Lavelle SENDIAS Officer and Sarah Algar SENDIAS Liaison Officer for their sterling work – during the evening and for our children
Throughout the evening there were opportunities for networking with governor colleagues.
Feedback from the event concerning the room, especially acoustics, and the refreshments has been taken on board!

7 :00LASGB Spring 2024 Workshop – ‘Personal Development – recent guidance regarding the statutory elements and the consultation on gender questioning children’
Roxana Sardais, Leader of the LCC Equality and Diversity Team, and Jennifer MacDonald, PSHE adviser for LCC, outlined the difficult area of Personal Development; they described what the statutory elements are and explored the latest consultation around gender questioning.
Governors discussed these often contentious issues and raised suggested areas for further discussion with schools.

Special Schools Workshop: Developing the Curriculum and Measuring the Impact on Pupils – 17 May 2023

19 :00The LASGB held a “Special Schools” Workshop on Wednesday 17 May 2023 and this was a “Face to Face” event. The Workshop commenced at 19:00 but delegates joined from 18:30 for refreshments.
Our first speaker for the evening was Angela Holdsworth, CEO, The View Trust who discussed “The Steps Required to Develop a Curriculum for a Special School”. Our other speakers were Alison Ashley and Danielle Lamb, Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher respectively of Hebden Green Special School, Winsford, Cheshire who discussed the “Methods of Measuring the Impact of the Curriculum on Special School Pupils”.
Whilst the focus was on Special Schools the material is also be of interest to those in mainstream especially those who are responsible for Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) pupils.
British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreters were available for those who needed BSL support.

LASGB Workshop – Academisation

As all members will be aware the “White Paper” published before Easter
(now an Education Bill) outlined the Governments ambition that
every school should become part of a multi-academy trust (MAT) by 2030.
In addition, as you may have seen on the Lancashire Schools
Portal – Edwina Grant, Executive Director for Education & Children Services, provided us with a video update outlining the county council view on their proposals. Tickled Trout Hotel , Preston Refreshments 6-30 . Workshop 7pm until 9 pm.
This workshop looked at how the policy and strategy is being put into practice.
Sally Richardson, Head of Inclusion, expanded on future SEND provision and we had time for discussion on mainstream SEND Units.
It was a really interesting evening and we would like to thank all those who helped make it a successful workshop.

Wellbeing is the responsibility of us all but how are schools tackling the issue?
In our first Face to Face workshop since 2019, we will provide a sandwich buffet at 6-30 pm before engaging and informative speakers to include Russell Clark, Headteacher and member of ACSL National Council a leading professional on wellbeing at all levels; Clive Gregory on the role of Wellbeing Governors; and Lorimer Russell-Hayes who will introduce some wellbeing case studies.
It should be a really interesting evening so book your place on our website . If you are still not comfortable with Face to Face meetings, the workshop recording will be available on our website after the event.

Special School Governor Workshop

19 :00The Workshop will covered Preparation for Adulthood and PSHE/RHE in the context of Special Schools.
Our speakers were Gail Beeton and Sarah McEwan respectively.
There was also a plenary session on Catch Up Funding led by David Bird.
British Sign Language Interpreters were available to provide support to those who require it.

Speaker Neil Yates.
At work, Neil has been at Lancashire FA for eight years as Head of Safety and Well-being.
Neil is a National Leader of Governance and has been a school governor for fourteen years and the chair of a primary school for five.
He is part of the LCC tutor team, writing and delivering training, and conducting reviews of governance.
